Historic Events

1956

Established the Department of Western Languages and Literature under the College of Liberal Arts

1978

Designed courses for the two tracks of the department: Literature and Linguistics

1986

Established the Graduate Institute of Western Languages and Literatures, with two divisions: Literature and Linguistics

1989

The College of Foreign Languages and Literature was separated from the College of Liberal Arts. The department of English subsequently became affiliated with the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, and the departmental office was relocated to the rear wing of the Bai Nian Building on the hillside campus.

1991

The undergraduate and graduate programs were officially renamed the Department of English and the Graduate Institute of English, respectively.
 

1992

The first issue of The Wenshan Review of Literature and Culture was published.

1993

Assisted in the establishment of the Graduate Institute of Linguistics

1995

The undergraduate department and graduate institute were integrated and collectively renamed the Department of English.

1999

Established The Master of Arts in English Teaching (ETMA) Program

2000

Established the Ph.D. program, comprising two divisions: Literature and TESOL

2000

Hosted the First Wenshan Review Academic Conference

2001

The departmental office was relocated from the Bai Nian Building to the front wing of the Ji Tao Building.

2003

Collaborated with nearby Wanxing and Ming Dao Elementary Schools to provide remedial English instruction for students from low- and middle-income families (as community counselors from the Department of English)

Held the First Workshop on Literary Theory

2004

Opened admissions for the TESOL division of the Master’s Program

Established an exchange student program between the ETMA Program of the English Department and institutions in Canada

Publication of the first issue of the Taiwan Journal of TESOL (TJTESOL)

2008

Opened service-learning courses: After-school Tutoring at the Bethany Children & Family Foundation, Operation and Management of the Department of English Library, and Alumni Service Courses.

2009

Held the First English Camp

Offered service-learning courses: Hope Reading and English Teaching and Counseling at Shih-fen Elementary School.

2010

Changed the “Drama Competition” to “English Night”

2012

Offered a service-learning course: English tutoring at Muzha Junior High School.

2014

Offered service-learning courses: After-school English Tutoring at Wanfang Elementary School and English teaching and tutoring for children in disaster-affected areas

Faculty members of the English department co-founded the “Enlightenment and Romanticism Network” (EARN) across institutions

2015

The Wenshan Review of Literature and Culture established an International Editorial Board and an Advisory Board.

2017

Alumnus Te-Hsing Shan (Research Fellow, Academia Sinica) was selected as an Outstanding Alumni of National Chengchi University.

2019

To alleviate the sense of isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a podcast titled ENGlightenment was initiated by the department chair and subsequently continued by students.

2021

Faculty members of the department and international scholars co-founded the Gothic in Asia Association (GAA).

2022

The Wenshan Review of Literature and Culture joined the Asian Journals Network (AJN).

Collaborated with Wenshan School of Special Education to launch a service-learning activity titled “English Teaching × Special Education”

2024

Students of the department established the departmental Instagram account (nccueng).

The department established the “Interdisciplinary Bilingual Micro Program.”

2025

The Taiwan Journal of TESOL (TJTESOL) received the “Journal Immediate Dissemination Award” from the National Central Library.

Established a “High School Hub Section” on the Department of English website

The department established “Creative English Cultivation Micro program.”

The department established a faculty mentor system.

2025~

2026

Classics and Ancient History at NCCU was ranked 32nd in the QS Rankings, and the Department of English was selected as one of the recipients of the Ministry of Education’s “Top 100 Excellence” Higher Education Sprout Project.
