History and Growth
A long history of English Department has been sparkled by a series of progress and achievements. With its original goals on providing students with trainings in the English language and literature, this department has been moving toward some collaborative projects with other colleges on campus and with foreign universities as well. More interdisciplinary courses will be introduced to streamline students' capacities in their career and advanced studies.
Mission & Vision
The current faculty of the department is composed of 25 full-time faculty members, including 8 professors, 14 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, and 1 lecturer. With 20 part-time teachers, all together there are 45 teachers in the department.
Our Expectations
Our objectives are to cultivate (1) scholars in literature and linguistics (2) potential teachers for elementary or high schools (3) bilingual specialists in communications, trade and economic affairs, as well as international affairs.
What We Are Proud of
Our curriculum that includes both literature and linguistics was begun in 1978, predating any other similarly constituted programs among English or other foreign language departments in the country. Course emphasis within the department is as follows:
I. Undergraduate
Course emphasis for the undergraduate program is:
1. Literature: We emphasize study of English and American literature, understanding of cultural background, and introduction to literary theories and criticism. We also try to cultivate within our students the ability to appreciate, understand, and analyze literary works, as well as to inspire them to pursue fine-grained, creative research.
2. Linguistics: Through the analysis of phonetics, syntax and semantics, along with investigations in TESOL, psycholinguistics, socio-linguistics and pragmatics, we try to arouse student interest in linguistic phenomena and encourage students to observe languages carefully and analyze them systematically.
3. Language training: We promote the acquisition of sophisticated skills in oral expression, writing, and translation so that students can pursue careers in translation, cultural exchange, communications, trade and economic affairs, or foreign affairs that require fluent English (and other western languages) so as to promote the image of Taiwan.
II. M.A.
Instruction in the M.A. program emphasizes a harmony of theories and practical application. Coursework focuses on the study of English and American literature, the works of particular periods, significant English and American authors, and literary theories.

The program was established in 1999 to further the ideals of continuing education, to improve the quality of English teaching among those who have already begun their careers, and to meet the needs of elementary and high schools. The courses emphasize an integration of theory and practice. In addition to TESL seminars, many new courses are opening up.
III. Ph.D.
The Ph.D. program offers course-work toward a Ph.D. degree in Literature and TESOL. Where relevant we try to encourage studies that are adapted to the specific needs and concerns of the local environment. Moreover, development of the respective disciplines and the interest of students are taken into consideration.
Future and Something to Work for
The Department is and will play an aggressive role in two directions.
1. More diversified and flexible curriculum
In addition to enriching linguistic and literature courses, the Department intends to:
(1) Plan courses on other second languages and cultures, making full use of the resources of the College of Foreign Languages;
(2) Plan courses of practical English, also drawing upon the resources of the wider university community.
(3) Introduce interdisciplinary courses to the departmental course structure.
(4) Work with other departments, such as journalism, business administration and social sciences, to develop double-major or joint-degree programs.
2. Teaching and guidance counseling
Establish a course advisor system. Several teachers representing each discipline will serve as course advisors to cooperate with class instructors in guiding students to select courses according to their aptitudes, interests, capabilities, and personal needs.
How You May Join Us
Two methods are available for applying to our department: one is recommendation by which 35% of our students are admitted, and the other is joint entrance examination by which 65% of our students are admitted.
Scholarships (Undergraduate)
1. Professor Po-ying Lin's Scholarship for students from poor families or for students with exemplary filial conduct. Two N.T. $ 10,000 scholarships are awarded to deserving students each year.
2. Mrs. Fu-sheng Li, Mother of Professor Liu Commemoration Scholarship. Two N.T. $ 3,000 scholarships, one of which is awarded annually to a Department of English student, and one of which is awarded annually to a School of Education student.
Facility & Resources
To satisfy the needs of teaching and research and to avoid waste, the department established the library and the equipment committees. These two committees are responsible for purchase and management of books, computers, and AV equipment. Most books and AV equipment are in the main library, the Social Sciences Data Center, the Language and Audio-visual Education Center, or the Computer Center. To assist those preparing for classes or conducting research, however, the department has its own library, AV Viewing Rooms, equipment room, computer room, meeting room and interpretation room.
Department Library
The library has a collection of more than ten thousand books representing English and American Literature, Linguistics and TESL, hundreds of reference books, and subscriptions to more than ten periodicals. The library is also equipped with four computers to facilitate information seeking on the Internet. Students manage the library under the direction of faculty members.
AV Viewing Room
The department has two AV Viewing Rooms-AV Viewing Room I seats 41 and AV Viewing Room II seats 29.
AV Viewing Room I is equipped with one white board, one built-in screen, four speakers, one DCD player, one VHS player, one amplifier and one portable cabinet for AV machines (including one TV, one DVD player and one VHS player.)
AV Viewing Room II is equipped with one white board, one projector, one VCD player, one closed caption decoder, one DVD player, two TVs and two VHS players.
Equipment room
Used for storage of magnetic tape degaussers, cameras, portable visualizers, portable LCD projectors, notebooks, laminators, transcribers, slide-viewing machine, movable cabinet for AV machines (including one TV, one DVD player and one VHS player.), TVs, DV cameras, direct projectors, digital voice recorders, dubbing machines, slide projectors, overhead projectors, stands, cameras, microphone, tape recorders and hundreds of tape, video tape and slides for teaching.
Computer room
The department owns a computer room in which there are 11 PCs and 2 laser printers.
Meeting room
One meeting room which seats 25.
