Abstract: Plato is often understood as a fierce critic of art (because of his critique of poetry in Republic 2-3 and 10) and an enemy of the imagination (because Socrates ranks imagination lowest on the Divided Line simile). This lecture argues that both these common views are at best one-sided and at worst simply false. In Republic 6-7, by contrast, Socrates presents a positive view of art and, from these books, a strikingly positive view of the higher imagination is developed by later thinkers such as Plotinus, Proclus, etc. and transmitted to the Islamic world where it becomes the forerunner of classical modern views such as that of Coleridge and others.
Bio: Professor Kevin Corrigan is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanities in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He is the author, translator, and editor of twenty books, including seven monographs, most notably A Less Familiar Plato (Cambridge UP, 2023); Love, Friendship, Beauty and the Good (Cascade Book, 2018); Reason, Faith and Otherness in Neoplatonic and Early Christian Thought (Ashgate Press, 2013); Mind, Soul and Body in the 4th Century: Evagrius of Pontus and Gregory of Nyssa (Ashgate Press, 2009); Plato's Dialectic at Play: Structure, Myth, and Argument in the Symposium (Penn State Press, 2004); Plotinus: A Practical Introduction to Neoplatonism (Purdue University Press, 2004); and Plotinus' Theory of Matter - Evil and the Question of Substance (Peeters Press, 1996). His one hundred and thirty-seven refereed articles and book chapters span the gamut from classics to philosophy to religion to literature and have been published in journals and collected volumes all over the world.
